Baxter, Rethink's trainable robot, uses its two arms to complete menial tasks so humans don't have to
The bot sets itself apart from other workplace robots with its friendly face, ability to adjust to changing work conditions and relative affordability ($22,000) — but it's not the perfect fit for every job. Now, however, Baxter has a one-armed brother named Sawyer, which Rethink claims will help cover roughly 90% of manufacturing tasks that cannot be automated by more traditional solutions.
Sawyer, which also features a friendly tablet face, weighs just 42 pounds (Baxter wears 165 pounds), but still manages a roughly 39-inch reach (one Baxter arm can reach out 41 inches). Sawyer also beats Baxter on payload: It can handle up to 8.8 pounds, while Baxter manages 5 pounds. Baxter, though, does have 14 degrees of freedom, while Sawyer has just seven.
